Yesterday  I was out evangelising.

I was sitting in McDonalds with a friend talking and I hadn’t shared the gospel with anyone up until this point in the day.  It was 7pm.

A man came in and sat at the table next to us.  He was mid 40′s and quite rough looking.  I figured he probably had some manual labouring job.

He was on his own, and near to us, and wasn’t eating, so I felt to approach him.  I checked the gospel video was ready (i.e. head phones were untangled, biblein11 video selected, volume just right etc) and went over to him.

His name was Bruce. Once I got him going, I went back to my friend Harvey and we continued talking.

When Bruce finished, he came over to us to return the iphone.

“What did you think?” I said.

It was then that we heard the most remarkable story.  This is what he told us.

“You wouldn’t believe this but you coming over to me was very significant.  My parents are full on Christians in Tauranga.  They have been praying for me all my life but I haven’t ‘crossed the line’ yet.  Three years ago I nearly died through alcohol poisoning.

I am a self employed plumber.  I would get up in the morning and start drinking and I’d drink all day until late into the night.

I was doing this day after day for months.

I’d try and get some work done each day to keep earning money, but my work output was going down hill fast.

I was losing heaps of weight and sleep was getting harder and harder.

Eventually lost my family and all my friends except those who were heavy drinkers like me.

One day when I was at home and completely drunk, I was listening to the radio and I heard about an 0800 number I could ring to get help.

Within a few hours of phoning, I was in the drug and alcohol rehab centre in Auckland.

They started feeding me up and looking after me.

On the third day I was there, something incredible happened.

I was in the shower and feeling as low as I’d ever felt in my life. I burst into tears and felt like I was going down a black, horrible tunnel. I was at the end.

I cried cried out to Jesus to help me.

Suddenly, the whole atmosphere in the shower lightened up and I was flooded with a great peace.

In an instant I felt my alcohol addiction drop off me, like a bath robe falling off my shoulders and onto the floor of the shower.  It was a strong physical sensation.

I knew this was God, and it was a miracle.

I just stayed in the shower with the water running and laughed and cried and laughed and cried and thanking God.

That was three years ago.

I have not touched a drink since then and my life is now back on track.

I have a new partner and I am seeing my children again.

Since that time in rehab I have known God was on my case.

My parents, as I said, are full on Christians and they are praying for me.

The video has really helped me understand what Christianity is all about and what it means to become one.

No one has ever explained this to me before. All my parents have ever said was ‘you need to give your life to Jesus.”‘

Bruce and I and Harvey talked for quite some time after he’d told us his story.

At the end of our conversation we prayed together, right there in the middle of Mcdonalds.

I was amazing at God miracle working power.

I gave Bruce the follow up booklet “HOW TO BE SURE OF GOING TO HEAVEN WHEN WE DIE” which explains what it means to be a Christian, why we need to be forgiven, and what God does with us between the point of conversion and death.

It’s an incredible little booklet to help people grasp the truth of the gospel.

It’s especially good for people who think their goods works will qualify them for heaven.

This encounter with Bruce just shows how non-Christians really want to know about God.

I have Bruce’s phone number and email and, if God wills, he and his partner will come to church this weekend.

He told me his partner thought she was good enough to get to heaven as she was.
